Why Foundation?
The Foundation Level qualification is aimed at professionals who need to demonstrate practical knowledge of the fundamental concepts of software testing. This includes people in roles such as test designers, test analysts, test engineers, test consultants, test managers, user acceptance testers and IT Professionals.
What are the entry criteria?
There are no formal requirements for this certification. Foundation level aims at all the individual who are involved in Software Testing & at those who are eager to acquire basic knowledge of fundamentals of Software Testing.
Validity?
Foundation level certification is valid for life time.
Which levels are available after Foundation?
Holders of the Foundation certificate are eligible to continue on to higher level software testing qualifications, certifying themselves at Advanced level, and then at the Expert level, as shown below. The entire learning journey is underpinned by the ISTQB® Glossary.
Foundation Level Content

The exam aims to verify that the candidate has acquired the professional knowledge contained in the syllabus.
The Foundation Level exam is characterized by:
- 40 multiple-choice questions
- a scoring of 1 point for each correct answer
- a pass mark of 65% (26 or more points)
- a duration of 60 minutes (or 75 minutes for candidates taking exams that are not in their native or local language)
Why Advanced?
The Advanced Level qualification is aimed at people who have achieved an advanced point in their careers in software testing. This includes people in roles such as testers, test analysts, test engineers, test consultants, test managers, user acceptance testers and software developers. This Advanced Level qualification is also appropriate for anyone who wants a deeper understanding of software testing, such as project managers, quality managers, software development managers, business analysts, IT directors and management consultants. To receive Advanced Level certification, candidates must hold the Foundation Certificate and satisfy the Exam Board which examines them that they have sufficient practical experience to be considered Advanced Level qualified. Refer to the relevant Exam Board to understand their specific practical experience criteria.
The Advanced Level has three Syllabus:
- Test Manager
- Test Analyst
- Technical Test Analyst
A specific exam and certification is available for each of the three modules.
When a Certified tester successfully achieves certification on all three modules, he receives a "Full Advanced" certificate.
What are the entry criteria?
For Bachelors Degree (or higher) Holders in Computer Science or related fields
- Foundation Level Clearance
- 24 Months of Testing Experience in IT, Testing, Development, QA, Engineering or related fields (For any 2 sub-levels)
- Min. 36 Months of experience mandatory for Adv. Complete Certification(For all 3 sub-levels)
For Non Bachelors Degree (or higher) Holders in Computer Science or related fields
- Foundation Level Clearance
- 60 Months of Testing Experience in IT, Testing
- Development, QA, Engineering or related fields

What skills does an Advanced level individual have?
An individual with the Advanced Level Certificate has extended the broad understanding of testing acquired at Foundation Level to enable the role of Test Manager or Test Analyst to be performed. Test Analyst skills may be further extended into the role of Technical Test Analyst.
The Advanced Level establishes a platform from which further skills and knowledge may be acquired at the Expert Level. After achieving experience as a Test Manager, for example, a person may choose to develop their testing career further by acquiring Expert Level certifications in the subjects of test management and improving the test process.
People possessing an ISTQB® Advanced Level Certificate may use the Certified Tester Advanced Level (acronym CTAL-TM, CTAL-TA, and CTAL-TTA, according to the module for which they are certified.
People possessing all the 3 advanced level certificates can obtain the Full Advanced level certificate.
